The aim of this project is to develop a device that detects over speeding of vehicle on highways and alerts traffic authorities in case of any speed limit violation. In the present conventional system, handheld radar gun is used to detect and record a vehicle’s speed is an ineffective method.
The proposed system checks an over speeding vehicle or rash driving by calculating the speed of the passing vehicle using the time taken to travel between two set points (at a fixed distance). A set point consists of a pair of sensors comprising an IR transmitter and an IR receiver and each pair is installed on either side of the road at a fixed distance. Speed limit is set by the police people who use the system depending upon the traffic at that location.
Time taken by a vehicle to travel from one set point to the other is calculated by control circuit. Based on that time, the system then calculates speed and displays it on a seven-segment display. Moreover, if the vehicle crosses the set speed limit, a buzzing sound alerts the police.
This concept can be extended in future by integrating a camera with the system that will capture the image of the number plate of the vehicle and send it to the traffic authorities.
Our proposed project aims to develop a system that detects cars driving at speeds over specified limit and inform concerned authorities immediately. Road accidents occurrences have increased recently so there needs to be a system that allows to detect overspeeding cars. Current speed detection systems are handheld guns held by police personnel that allow them to check car speed and then manually inform authorities about the vehicle. Whereas this proposed system does not need any human interception and records car speed as well as wirelessly informs authorities of over speeding detection.
The system first calculates the time required by the specific car for moving from first point to the second. Based on this data it calculates the car speed. This data is gathered and then transmitted by the system wirelessly to concerned authorities at a remote location. The mechanism consists of IT transmitter- receiver pair that work in combination for vehicle detection purpose. The microcontroller is now used to process this data and calculate the time required by vehicle to travel from one point to the other. Depending upon this time it now calculates vehicle speed as well as displays this on an LCD display. The system also sends this data wirelessly. It sounds a buzzer alarm if an overspeed vehicle is detected.
